Risks:

  • Some tenderness in gum and cheek muscles may be experienced in the beginning and after switching to each new set of aligners
  • As the bite changes throughout the treatment, there might be some degree of discomfort during the treatment period
  • There might be some degree of gum irritation, tooth soreness, or dry mouth due to the appliance
  • The aligners may temporarily affect speech (temporary lisp), although it should disappear within one or two weeks.
  • Attachments may dislodge and require replacement
  • In some cases, there might be a need for further orthodontic appliances

Patient Responsibilities:

  • Aligners should be properly worn at least 22 hours a day. Failure to do so might not result in a positive outcome and might need re-treatment.
  • All review appointments need to be attended to ensure that that the treatment is progressing well
  • One should maintain proper oral hygiene and avoid sugary and staining drinks while wearing aligners
  • Retainers need to be worn every night after the treatment is over to prevent the treatment from relapsing
